The Great Depression: a stock market crash, vast unemployment, breadlines, millions barely scraping by. With household incomes dwindling, women began to enter the workforce in record numbers. Historically, women had stayed home to tend the kitchen and raise the children. Everything changed during the Great Depression. By 1936, twenty-five percent of all American women were employed outside the home. With public service posters like this one pasted to street corners and abandoned buildings, millions of women began to imagine life with a paycheck.

In the decades before Homeland Security and FEMA, regular citizens were expected to provide for their own safety. In 1936, the US Government released this poster, encouraging Americans to stay safe. Its strong design incorporates a civil defense symbol that would have resonated with Depression-era Americans. Though the concept of civil defense has largely disappeared, this poster is a reminder that regular civilians were once responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation.
