First in the Fight - Always Faithful - Be a U.S. Marine!
By the time the United States Navy produced this poster in 1917, its fleet had largely transitioned from wooden ships to steel-sided dreadnoughts. The "Great White Fleet" had recently completed a circumnavigation of the globe to demonstrate American naval might, but with the dawn of World War I, the Navy was looking for volunteers. An image of a seaman riding a torpedo was just the thing. Bareback bronco imagery convinced many men to enlist, though many would soon find that Navy life was not all fun and games.

What have You done for Ireland? - What have you done for Ireland? / How have you answered the Call? / Are you pleased with the part you're playing / In the job that demands us all? / Have you changed the tweed for the khaki / To serve with the rank and file / As your comrades are gladly serving, / Or isn't it worth your while? - Can you meet the eyes of soldiers? / Or have you to turn away? / When they talk of the stay-at-home slacker / Have you never a word to say? / When you read the roll of honour / Of living and dead--what then? / Does the voice within approve you / As one to be ranked with men? - For if in Ireland's glory / Each soldier may claim his share, / So he who would shirk his duty, / His burden of shame must bear. / You who are strong and active, / You who are fit for the fray, / What have you done for Ireland? / Ask of your heart to-day!

Is Your Conscience Clear on These Two Great Questions - 1. Have you a real reason for not joining the Army, or is that which you put before yourself as a reason, after all only an excuse? - 2. Are you only going to do your duty when the law says you must? - Lord Kitchener in his grave and urgent appeal uses these solemn words: "Does the call to duty find no responses in you until reinforced--let us rather say superseded--by the call of compulsion? It is not for me to tell you your duty. That is a matter for your conscience." - Why Hold Back from doing what thousands of your brother Irishmen have not hesitated about
