Ah, New York! In the early days of aviation, few cities could rival the airports of New York. Floyd Bennett Field was built in 1930 and featured concrete runways and electrical illumination at a time when most airports offered dirt runways and no night landings. North Beach Airport, completed in 1939, was a modern marvel, featuring four runways and the world's first American Airlines Admirals Club. Air travel fascinated the public, and thousands of visitors paid a 10-cent fee to watch aircraft take off and land. Today, Floyd Bennett Field is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, while North Beach Airport has been rechristened as New York LaGuardia Airport.
